Energy Experts: WA Doesn’t Need New Polluting Gas Project

A NEW REPORT from the Conservation Council of Western Australia and The Australia Institute has outlined the risks associated with the proposed Scarborough gas project. This project is located off the coast of Western Australia and could become one of the most polluting gas projects in Australia.

Energy experts are calling on the Western Australian Government to reject this expensive and polluting project, highlighting the state’s massive potential to become a leader in clean energy and industries.

Greg Bourne, Climate Council spokesman and former President, BP Australasia says: “The International Energy Agency has just made it clear that there can be no new coal, oil, and gas expansion if the world is to get to net zero by 2050. The West Australian Government must not provide approvals to the polluting Scarborough gas project. Renewable energy and batteries are getting cheaper by the day. Short-sighted investments in new gas make zero sense from an energy and economic perspective. New gas will delay the state’s transition to a clean economy, while increasing pollution and harming our health. As a former West Australian, I know the state has incredible clean energy potential.” Location: Sydney

Tim Baxter, Climate Council Senior Researcher says: “If allowed to go ahead, the Scarborough gas project will massively increase Western Australia’s emissions and worsen climate change. As the rest of the world moves towards net zero emissions and transitions from gas and coal to renewable energy, approval for the Scarborough project also risks leaving the state with a very expensive stranded asset. Gas is a polluting fossil fuel that’s driving climate change. There simply cannot be any new gas projects in WA. Western Australia should focus on building its advantage in renewable hydrogen and support the development of the critical minerals industries required as the world economy becomes cleaner.” Location: Melbourne
